Rewind to 1998.

Picture this: young, geeky Randy—freshly minted computer engineering grad, about to take on the world (or so I thought).

My first assignment? Fly to Argentina and set up a new corporate system.

In my head, it was going to be an in-and-out job, no fuss. Then I got hit with the curveball.

“Randy, you’ll be supervising a local tech over there. Remotely.”

𝙃𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝙪𝙥. 𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙚? 𝙍𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮? 𝙈𝙚?

I was fresh out of school, and while I knew my tech, the “leading others” part? Not so much.

The reality hit hard. Computers, I knew. People… not so much.

I stumbled through language differences (turns out my Spanish wasn’t that universal), cultural nuances, and the unexpected reality that “managing” meant a whole lot more than just teaching tech skills. I needed to understand, adapt, and lead—three things school hadn’t prepped me for.

𝙎𝙤, 𝙄 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙄 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙.

I dove headfirst into books, courses, and some good old-fashioned trial and error.

I learned how to motivate, communicate, and manage across borders and cultures.

I learned to lead with empathy, which was crucial in the wake of 9/11 when the world turned upside down. That experience made me shift my focus to leading with compassion, balance, and a real sense of purpose.

Today, With over 25 years in the IT leadership trenches, I can say I’ve been where you are.

I know what it’s like to feel out of your depth, to fumble, and finally, to find your footing.
